Dog coats & outerwear

Choose a coat that keeps your dog comfortable without getting in the way of the walk.

Finding the right coat for your dog

Dog coats come in many styles, from light rain jackets to insulated winter layers. A short-haired dog may appreciate extra protection in cold weather, while a thick-coated breed may need less help.

The ideal coat covers the back and torso without restricting the shoulders, rubbing the armpits or stopping your dog from toileting comfortably. For active dogs, look for a secure fit that will stay in place on a longer walk.

Think about the season and your dog’s activity level. A waterproof shell can be useful in rain; an insulated coat may suit colder, slower outings. Very warm garments can be uncomfortable on mild days.

How to measure

Measure neck, chest girth and length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Compare those measurements with the individual maker’s sizing chart.

Try the coat indoors. Your dog should be able to sit, stretch and move freely before wearing it for a full walk.

Care and maintenance

Wash outerwear in line with its care label and dry it thoroughly. Check straps, buckles and seams periodically, especially after muddy walks.

If a coat traps moisture or causes rubbing, stop using it and choose a better fit.
